More About Hana, Maui, Hawaii
Hana is "isolated" from the rest of the towns on Maui by a famous winding highway through the thick and lush Hawaiian rainforest. It is 52 miles from Kahului in central Maui and takes anywhere from two to four hours to drive this world-famous stretch of road with the most amazing scenery.
History of Hana
Hana was first settled by Polynesians sometime between 500 and 800 AD. much later a sugar plantation was started by George Wilfong in 1849. This became a lucrative spot to farm sugar and by 1883 the area had six sugar plantations. But in 1946 the last plantation came to a close.
The closing of work opportunities led plantation workers to move to the western side of Maui. Shortly after the last sugar plantation closed, the Ka'uiki Inn opened and the main economy transferred from sugar to tourism. The Hotel changed its name to Hotel Travaasa-Hana and is now known as the Hyatt Hana-Maui. In 1926 the famous road to Hana was completed in gravel bringing cars and a few more residents. Though the main driving force in Hana's economy is tourism the town remains quiet and populated by just over 3,000 people.
