Living in Lahaina Maui Hawaii

Lahaina is located 45 minutes from the town of Kahului and more specifically the Kahului Airport which is where the majority of tourists fly into including everyone on a commercial flight. The town of Lahaina used to be known as Lele which translates to "relentless sun". This town has some of the richest histories on the island of Maui and has been transformed into a hotspot for tourism with a hub of commercial activities.

Lahaina got its start as a historic whaling village in the mid-1800s when there was a large whaling boom. At the time there were about 1500 sailors working on as many as 400 ships taking leave in the town. This was the town where the famous Herman Melville liked to reside. You may recognize the name as he was the author of the timeless classic novel Moby Dick which helped to cement the culture of whaling in the mid-1800s into history forever.

Lahaina is on the National Register of Historic Places and there are still some areas where you can take in these first historic days of the town. Front Street is of course the most popular hub for activities and it has been ranked as one of the top 10 "Greatest Streets" by the American Planning Association. The town of Lahaina is full of activities on both land and water as well as several great real estate properties.

Popular Places in Lahaina

Front Street

Like Disneyland's Main Street, this is the first stop for tourist activity in Lahaina. In its early beginnings, it was the gathering place of many rowdy whalers that came into town after docking their boats. Currently Front Street is home to great restaurants, bars that are the hub of nightlife, T-shirt shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and much more of the like.

Front Street also hosts many interesting historical spots such as the US Seamen's Hospital, the Historic Lahaina Prison, the Pioneer Inn which is the oldest hotel in the state, the old courthouse, and more. It is suggested not to miss grabbing a map and taking the self-guided Lahaina historic walking tour.

The enormous Banyan tree that lives on Front Street is an iconic Lahaina landmark. This tree began as a small seedling that was planted after being gifted by missionaries traveling from India. It was planted on April 24, 1873, to observe the 50th anniversary of the first American protestant mission in Lahaina. The tree now stands 60 feet tall and branches expand nearly 200 feet across. It is the largest banyan tree in all of Hawaii.

Halloween is something of a spectacle on Front Street in Lahaina. The Halloween festivities in Lahaina shut down Front Street every year and bring in 20,000 to 30,000 visitors. It has been nicknamed the "Mardi Gras of the Pacific". Some of the most notable activities of Halloween in Lahaina include the costume parade and a Mardi Gras-style party. You can vote for your favorite costumes if you are not into participating in the parade by throwing beads at your favorite costume wearer.

You can book anything from sunset cruises around the harbor to whale watching and dolphin finding, to extreme sports like zip lining. You can even charter a boat and take the most epic fishing adventure you have ever been on.

Both on land and in the waters of the harbor there are plenty of tours to experience and learn more about Lahaina and extending areas of Maui.

The Beaches

There is a handful of great beaches in Lahaina the two most popular are Ka'anapali Beach and Napili Beach.

Ka'anapali Beach is probably the most popular beach on Maui with 3 miles of white sand and deep blue water. This is a hotspot for every water activity you could possibly imagine including paddle boarding, surfing, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and much more. There are great hotels, restaurants, local shops, spas, and other commercial services along the beach. The speech often makes several best beaches lists.

Napili Beach is a popular beach but much more laid-back as compared to other spots in Lahaina. Napili Beach is best known for its crescent-shaped cove and as being one of the best places to snorkel in all of Hawaii. Snorkeling on Napili Beach offers sites of sea turtles and all of the amazing wildlife that call the reef area home. This is a great place to swim as the waves are much calmer compared to other areas of Maui. It is a great family-friendly spot for swimming.
