More About Maalaea Central Maui Hawaii

Maalaea is a small town in Central Maui in the Southwestern portion of the area. It sits right along the harbor bearing the same name as the town. Some call it a small fishing village located in Central Maui precisely at the southern part of the isthmus between the mountain ridges of Haleakala and West Maui. Maalaea means freight train and refers to the surf break that breaks over the shallow coral reef in the harbor. The bay and harbor produce one of the world's fastest rideable waves during large southerly swells making it very popular with surfing enthusiasts.

It is a great quiet, but not too quiet, spot on Maui to settle into if you love to be right on the water where there is still plenty of activity but not where it is too overly crowded.

Things to Do in Maalaea

Inter-Island Boat Trips and Boat Tours

The Maalaea Habor accommodates several vessels that offer inter-island shipping and travel as well as fun activities like whale-watching cruises and chartered boats. There are many snorkeling and diving excursions that take off from the harbor to the offshore island of Molokini as well. The bay is a humpback whale sanctuary making it one of the coolest spots to take a whale watching excursion.

Maui Ocean Center

This is probably the city's largest attraction it is an aquarium that is home to a large variety of marine animals that can be viewed up close. It is a 3-acre aquatic display right on the harbor. There are more than 60 exhibits with hundreds of different sea creatures and every one is native to the Hawaiian islands. The turtle lagoon is a big hit with the smallest of visitors as well as the hammerhead harbor where you can come face-to-face with scalloped hammerhead sharks.

Kealia Pond Bird Sanctuary

Along the shores of the bay just outside of the Village Harbor area is one of the largest natural wetlands in the state of Hawaii. This area was established in 1992 to preserve and enhance wetland habitats for endangered birds in Hawaii. The main focus was on Hawaiian Stilts and Hawaiian Coots to provide a dependable habitat for these birds that were dwindling in numbers. It is a great place to roam around the unspoiled natural vegetation of Hawaii.

Surfing

Maalaea is known as one of the best places to catch a fast wave as it is named for its fast surf. It provides a rare but challenging surf break and has become popular with many local surfers. You can reach what is referred to as freight trains, this fast pace surf break, through Haycraft Beach Park. This is of course a spot for the most skilled experienced surfers.

This freight train fast-breaking surf is of course very rare and sometimes only happens after several years have passed. The swell can get as large as 6 feet. The best chance of catching it is during Hawaii's hurricane season.

Maalaea Harbor Village Shops

A collection of fun local shops and restaurants along the Harbor Village shops. This is an amazing place to get fresh local seafood cooked to perfection. One of the favorite spots is the Seascape Restaurant at the Maui Ocean Center. If you're looking for a great Hawaiian barbecue you can head to Beach Bums. This is also the place to find the general store, a small grocery where you can pick up needed daily items.
