More About Makena Maui Hawaii

Makena is located in an area of Maui with the most desirable weather. The rainshadow of the Haleakala volcano means the southern shore of Maui is the dryest spot on the island. It rarely rains here, the sun is out almost every single day. The southern shore is one of the most beloved spots to hit the beach on Maui, especially in nearby Wailea.

Though Makena beaches are known for their almost perfect conditions, the small town of Makena stays pretty quiet and serene as compared to the larger neighboring areas of south Maui.

Areas of Attraction in Makena

Makena Beaches

Makena State Park

This is referred to as Big Beach or Makena Beach and is the most popular beach in the town. Some say this is the best beach on the entire island, but that is subject to personal opinion, you may hear many others. This beach is 4 miles south of the Shops at Wailea on Makena Alanui Road. This is probably the most crowded part of Makena you'll ever experience especially on weekends and holidays. On weekdays it remains a pretty quiet and relaxed atmosphere. It is best known as a spot of crystal clear water and home to turtles. You can also take in amazing views of the Molokini Crater.

It is important to know that this beach is also home to some pretty strong surf conditions with strong undertows and pounding surf. Beyond hanging out on the shore you can also take a hike to the top of the Pu'u Ola'i cinder cone, it is an intense uphill hike but the view from the top is breathtaking.

Oneuli Black Sand Beach

Just north of the Pu'u Ola'i cinder cone is Maui's only black sand beach. This is a favorite spot for experienced snorkelers. There are amazing reef and lava rock formations that make a great habitat for several animals including fish, turtles, eels, and sometimes sharks. It is an amazing place to check out lava formations jutting into the water.

Golfing

One of the most recognized areas in Makena is the Makena Resort Golf Club. This club is members only designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior. The golf course advertises as being the home of two of Hawaii's best golf courses. From the course, you can take in views of the surrounding islands and play fast greens and steeper slopes for a challenging game every time.

The golf club also has a practice range, putting green, pro shop, and locker rooms with showers. It is advised that golfers reserve tee times three days in advance or more. The golf club is located at 5415 Makena Alanui Road

Turtle Town

Makena is home to the best place in Maui to observe sea turtles. Lava flows that have run straight into the ocean have created cliffs and caves making an excellent habitat for Hawaiian green sea turtles also known as Honu to make a home. Turtles love to rest on the bottom of the ocean here as well as enjoy swimming through the lava formations and eating algae off of the reef. This is one of the reasons why snorkeling is so popular on the beaches in Makena.

In the Turtle Town area, you can observe as many as a dozen turtles or more swimming together at a time. Turtle Town is about 2 1/2 miles south of the Shops at Wailea where Wailea Alanui Road turns into Mckenna Alanui Road. From here you turn right onto Honu Rd. And then right again on Makena Road where you will find the parking lot at Makena Landing Park. Turtle Town is located just off the point where the larger cliffs meet the ocean as you snorkel north of the shoreline. Not into snorkeling? You can take a kayak tour to this favorite spot of turtles as well.

Makena Real Estate

Makena may be a quiet piece of south Maui but it is not lacking in amazing real estate options. Makena has a mix of subdivisions, informal neighborhoods, a master-planned luxury resort community, and amazing large beachside estate homes. The subdivisions of Makena include One Palauea, Makena Place, Keauhou at Makena, Black Sands, and Makena Sunset. These subdivisions are small and quiet as compared to larger neighborhoods in bigger towns.

Makena Golf and Beach Club also offers real estate in a great mix of luxury estates, quaint beach cottages, low-maintenance condos, and multi-family properties. This is the most desirable area of real estate in Makena as anyone owning property at the club is able to access the championship golf courses and amenities of the beach club including the pool, spa, fitness center, and dining facilities. The best way to find out about available properties in the Makena Golf and Beach Club is by contacting a Maui real estate agent as many of the properties are not listed publicly on MLS.
