Paia Maui Hawaii

From the years of 1880 to 2000 Paia along the north coast of Maui in Hawaii was a hub of commercial sugar cane plantations. Today it is most widely known as the first stop on the Hana Highway as you exit Kahului just four miles from Maui's commercial airport. It is a quaint and funky town enjoyed by many tourists and beloved by a small population of year-round residents. 

Paia may be small in size and population, but it is huge in interesting history and things to do. Paia is often called Maui's Hippie Town. It is also very close to several internationally recognized windsurfing spots and has earned the name "The World Capital of Windsurfing."

Paia Fishmarket

This market has been in Paia since 1989. It was once the spot where everyone in town would gather to enjoy time together and a good meal. Today the market is owned by Moon and professional surfer Yuri. The market is loved for its fresh ingredients including locally grown produce and large portions at great prices. 

Cafe Des Amis

A casual dining venue that serves up Mediterranean and Indian cuisine. It is well-loved for its wide range of crepes, both sweet and savory. 

Cafe Mambo

Ho'okipa Beach

The favorite beach of windsurfers. In the winter the surf can reach heights as tall as 30 feet. It is recommended that only highly skilled pros enter the water during the winter and only with extreme caution. The beach has a protected area for sea turtles. Some have given it the name "the Beach of Sea Turtles" while others call it "the Windsurfing Captial of the World." 

H.A. Baldwin Beach

A great beach with much calmer waters. It is popular for its long stretch of shore, white sands, clear blue water, and extremely calm waters safe enough for babies to play. It is a perfect place for families to enjoy the beach. 

Haleakala National Park

This park covers a sizeable area of the island of Maui. It is of course home to the well-known Haleakala Volcano. It is also home to the beautiful Oheo Gulch. The park is on the inland border of Paia. An amazing place to enjoy the unmatched outdoor spaces of Hawaii. 

Golf

There are some great golf courses to be found in this smaller hippie town. It doesn't seem like a place you could find a great game of golf, but it is just one of the many interesting surprises you will find in Paia. The Dunes at Maui Lani is located here and was once voted as "One of the Best New Courses in America."
