The Best of South Maui

Makena Beach State Park

Mākena Beach State Park stands as one of the iconic coastal gems of Maui. Stretching nearly two-thirds of a mile, its pristine white sands create one of the largest undeveloped beachfronts on the island. Here, you can bask in the tranquility of nature, with no structures to disrupt the serene ambiance. Embraced by contrasting black-lava outcroppings, Mākena Beach offers a shield from the trade winds while presenting breathtaking vistas of the neighboring islands of Molokini and Kahoʻolawe.

The park is divided into two distinct sections known as Big Beach and Little Beach. Situated south of Wailea, Big Beach provides a secluded and more intimate alternative to the busier shores of Kāʻanapali and Lāhainā. On the other hand, Little Beach is a charming small cove that lacks amenities and lifeguard services, catering to those seeking a raw and unspoiled beach experience.

Kihei, situated on Maui's southwest shore, is a haven for beachcombers, occupying the sunniest and driest corner of the island. Once favored by Hawaiian royalty, Kihei boasts six miles of pristine beaches that provide unobstructed views of Kahoʻolawe, Molokini, Lānaʻi, and West Maui. In addition to swimming and surfing, visitors can indulge in fantastic snorkeling and kayaking adventures, with the added possibility of spotting majestic humpback whales breaching and spouting in the ocean.

Nestled within Kihei is the expansive Kalama Beach Park, spanning 36 oceanfront acres adorned with shady lawns and swaying palm trees. This park is home to the renowned "the Cove" surf spot, as well as beach volleyball courts, a roller-skating rink, a skate park, basketball and tennis courts, two baseball fields, picnic pavilions, and a playground tailored for younger children.

Just a short distance away, you'll find the charming spots of Kalepolepo, Waipuʻilani, and the trio of Kamaʻole beaches. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will discover Keālia Pond at the northern end of Kihei, a National Wildlife Conservation District that shelters endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots.

Heading north of Kihei leads you to the captivating Māʻalaea Bay, where pleasure boats embark on whale-watching expeditions, charter fishing excursions, and snorkeling trips to Molokini. Māʻalaea is also home to the family-friendly Maui Ocean Center, offering delightful experiences for visitors of all ages.

Renowned for its collection of five exquisite crescent-shaped beaches and world-class golf courses, Wailea stands as a prestigious resort community in South Maui, spanning an impressive 1,500 acres of land adorned with breathtaking ocean vistas. This lavish destination emanates an aura of exclusivity, tranquility, and expansiveness, covering an area three times larger than Waikīkī.

Within this remarkable area, you'll discover an array of renowned beaches that define its identity. Wailea Beach, acclaimed as "America's Best Beach", captivates visitors with its pristine beauty. Polo Beach offers exceptional opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, inviting you to explore the vibrant underwater world. Meanwhile, Ulua Beach Park attracts early morning and sunset enthusiasts, with walkers and joggers enjoying its serene surroundings.

Enhancing Wailea's reputation as a world-class destination, the trio of Wailea Blue, Wailea Gold, and Wailea Emerald courses collectively boast 54 holes of championship golf. These extraordinary fairways have played a pivotal role in establishing Wailea's fame as a golfer's paradise.
